According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the State of Indiana consistently ranks among the top 10 states with the highest number of motorcycle fatalities. In 2020, there were a total of 154 motorcycle fatalities in Indiana, which accounted for 16% of all traffic fatalities in the state. Here’s an overview of motorcycle accidents in the State of Indiana:

Dangers:

  1. Lack of visibility: Motorcycles are smaller and less visible than other vehicles on the road, which makes them more susceptible to accidents. Drivers of larger vehicles may not see motorcycles, especially in blind spots, leading to collisions.
  2. Speeding: Motorcyclists often enjoy the thrill of speed, but this increases the risk of accidents. High speeds make it harder to control a motorcycle and react to sudden changes in road conditions.
  3. Impaired driving: Operating a motorcycle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol greatly impairs judgment and reaction time, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
  4. Inexperienced riders: Inexperienced riders may not have the necessary skills and knowledge to handle a motorcycle, especially in hazardous conditions. Lack of training and experience can lead to accidents.
  5. Poor road conditions: Potholes, gravel, uneven pavement, and other road hazards can cause a motorcycle to lose control and crash.

 

Motorcycle accidents often lead to severe injuries or fatalities due to the lack of protection for riders.  According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, in 2019, there were 2,941 motorcycle accidents in the state, resulting in 2,030 injuries and 140 fatalities.  As for the areas of recovery for monetary damages, they include:

  1. Physical injuries: Motorcycle accidents often result in serious physical injuries, including head injuries, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, and road rash. These injuries can be life-threatening and may require extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation.
