Question: In the State of Indiana, what is the age requirement to be able to legally drive a golf cart on a public road?
Answer: The age is over 16 years old, but there can be a local ordinance that lowers the age for driving a golf cart on private roads. Specifically, an ordinance adopted under IC 9-21-1-3(a)(14) or IC 9-21-1-3.3(a) must require that an individual who operates a golf cart or off-road vehicle in the city, county, or town: (1) hold a driver’s license; or (2) be at least sixteen (16) years and one hundred eighty (180) days of age and hold: (A) an identification card issued under IC 9-24-16; or (B) a photo exempt identification card issued under IC 9-24-16.5. Further, it is important to ensure you have insurance on your golf cart, since golf carts and other motorized vehicles are usually not covered by a standard homeowner’s policy of insurance. Such vehicles usually need to be specifically add to your policy to ensure coverage.
